Styling Tips and Tricks for Year-round Beauty.
Is your Hair Color ready for Summer?
William Murphy, shares highlighting techniques for summer.
1. Brunettes, focus your highlights on the top of the
head, positioned down the natural part of your hair.
Randomly weave these panels and place them into foil,
begin ¼-1/2-inch from the scalp on each panel. This will
give the appearance of a naturally sunlit highlight. Feeling more daring?
Section from the ear forward, and place highlights vertically. Apply color
to the panels in the same method. For the most natural results, try using a
high-lift permanent hair color. This will give you natural color in just one step.
2. Blondes, begin your highlights at the crown and split your natural part
down the center from the crown to the forehead. Begin by taking “chunky”
sections and separating them about ½ inch apart. For the best results,
lighten the hair to the palest blonde. You will create contrast and definition.
Feeling more progressive? Add low-lighted panels every third or fourth
section. Make these about one shade darker than your natural color. You
will accentuate the contrast of your haircut.
3. Natural Redheads, use your natural parting rather than using a standard
technique. Try a “baliage,” or free-form technique. After parting, paint the
highlights onto the outermost and top layers of the hair. Use a high-lift permanent
hair color or a low-volume lightener to lift the hair. You will want
the outcome to be one-to-three shades lighter than your base. Apply color
using an eyelash applicator or a fine-bristled paintbrush. Randomly paint
color onto the hair in wispy strokes; for a separated look, try “marbleizing”
your application with more deliberate strokes. You will impart a subtle
brightness without adding a “high-maintenance” highlight to your look.
Remember, the best results are achieved with a licensed colorist.
Dive into Fall - Create Styles with Personality
In this world of high-tech gadgetry, who doesn’t own a at iron? This fall is the perfect time to get
creative and put your straightening skills to use. Smoothing out your strands can create an array of
different looks.
Here are some styling tips to try:
-
Dress up straightened hair by teasing at the crown and using clips or bobby pins to pull up the
front and sides. This gives a sleek, sophisticated look.
-
For a modern, messy look on straightened hair, take a dab of pomade and emulsify into your
hands. Pull through hair from roots to ends, then rub into scalp to give a root-lift effect. Don’t forget
lots of hairspray!
-
For a fun, “fl ippy” look, pull your iron through hair lifting up at the ends. This works best on a
layered cut.
-
Classic ponytails are always hot. Straighten hair using Rene Ferterer’s Spray Gloss. This will add
shine and smooth down y-aways. Let some straight pieces hang out around your face for a softer
more feminine look.
Once you’ve mastered these techniques, try to create your own.
This fall, fashion is about independence, and pushing your limits, creating daring styles and not
being afraid to show them off. A styling iron is the ultimate tool to give you any look imaginable.
So, have fun with it, and look your best this fall!
